Pope Francis is inviting all the world’s Catholics to participate in a consultation about how we experience “journeying together” as Church and where we feel the Spirit may be leading us, as Church, into the future. The invitation is to listen to one another and our faith experiences.
This consultation will bring together all of us in a gathering the Church calls a “synod.” The theme for this process: A Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission, concluding 2023.
Why?
The Catholic Church is facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities all over the world. Many have stopped practicing their faith. Divisions are experienced everywhere. The pandemic has had a negative impact. In this crucial moment, the Church is forging a pathway to profound renewal. The Church is holding a consultation to encounter one another, listen to each other’s experiences, and seek to discover what God is calling the Church to do in these times. The hope is to strengthen all aspects of our Church on every level and revitalize our mission in the world.
How can I participate?
For most, the synod consultation or prayerful listening sessions will take place through small groups at the parish level beginning in February. Keep an eye out for the announcement and please sign up to attend. The diocese will also reach out to marginalized and disaffiliated groups.
What's Next?
The diocese is holding a series of regional training sessions for pastors and parish leaders on who to invite as parish synod team members and facilitators. Training will take place from the end of January through early March. Parish Synod team leaders will conduct the “Synod Consultation / Listening Sessions” from February to early April. Results are shared with Diocese.
Regional Training Sessions will:
· Help build a dynamic, diverse, and relational team for your synod conversations
· Help create an agenda/structure for open and effective synod conversations
· Teach team members how to lead conversations effectively and empathetically
· Help develop an effective turnout strategy in your parish
